The first Zamboangueño Diocesan Priest to be appointed Parish priest of St. Ignatius was Fr. Luis Araneta from 1994 to the present.  It was during the term of Fr. Chito Araneta that the plans of a new parish Church were drawn up by a Tetuano – Architect Boboy Abarro who also designed the Cathedral.  The ground breaking ceremony and the laying of the corner stone on October 01, 1995 at 8:30 in the morning signals the construction of St. Ignatius of Loyola Church.

Meanwhile, with the rest of Christendom, the St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish welcomes the coming of the new millennium full of hope for better years to come, greater faith in the divine redeemer, and greater love for one another, for the whole mankind, for the salvation of all.

The Jubilee or Holy Year has been celebrated in the Church since 1300. Currently, it is celebrated every 25 years, although there are also special jubilee to mark significant events.  The last ordinary Holy Year was in 1975.  The Jubilee of the Year 2000 began last Christmas eve with the opening of the Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.  The Knights of Columbus and the Pontifical Council for Social Communications contributed for the worldwide coverage of this event.

The construction phase is almost done – thanks to the thousands of parishioners who have been responding notably the P 1,000.00 Club members here and abroad, their relatives and friends and all the lay religious organizations with their whole-hearted support.  And special thanks goes to the diocesan singing priests who compose the Paracletos who have been holding concerts for the Church featuring the likes of Marco Sison and Dulce for a bonus for all those who bought tickets for the last three shows.

Indeed, St. Ignatius encourages everyone to give all – mind, heart, liberty – all what one has – yes, even the last coins.  For that is what it means to pray:

Lord, teach me to be generous, to serve as you deserve to be served,

to give without counting the cost,

to fight without heeling the wounds,

to toil without seeking rest,

to spend one’s life without expecting any  other return

than the knowledge that I am doing God’s holy will.

And as St. Ignatius of Loyola Parish celebrates the Jubilee year, nothing can be more fitting and worth giving than a fully lit and painted new parish Church, TO GIVE GLORY TO GOD !
